The Poker Beginners Guide
Welcome to the Basics
Every legend started at the bottom. Whether you're trying to run it up with the crew or take down a major tournament, our step-by-step guide gives you the keys to the game:
1. The Game: What is No-Limit Hold'em?
-
The Hustle: It’s a game of skill, math, and psychology. "No-Limit" means exactly that—at any moment, you can bet every single chip you have (All-In) to protect your hand or sell a bluff.
-
The Loadout: You start with 2 Private Hole Cards that only you see. Over four rounds, 5 Community Cards are dropped in the center for everyone to use.
-
The Mission: Use any combination of your 2 cards and the 5 on the board to build the Strongest 5-Card Hand possible and take the pot.

2. The Setup: Blinds & Position

-
The Forced Entry (Blinds): Before cards are dealt, the two players to the left of the Dealer must put money in to start the pot. This ensures there is always something to play for.
-
Small Blind (SB): The player directly to the left of the Dealer. In our house, this is $1.
-
Big Blind (BB): The player to the left of the Small Blind. In our house, this is $3. This acts as the "minimum bet" to stay in the hand.
-
The Dealer Button (D): A disk that rotates clockwise every hand to track who acts last (the most advantaged position).
-
Special Rule (1v1): The Dealer takes on the Small Blind role. They act first before the flop, but get the advantage of acting last on every round after the flop
3. The Flow: How a Hand Goes Down

-
Pre-Flop (The Intro): You get your 2 cards. You decide to Fold (walk away), Call (match the $3), or Raise (apply pressure).
-
The Flop (The Beat Drops): The first 3 Community Cards are flipped. This is where you see if your hand is hitting or if you’re chasing.
-
The Turn (The Plot Twist): The 4th Community Card drops. The pot is getting thick; bets usually get bigger here.
-
The River (The Final Scene): The 5th and Final Card drops. All cards are on the table. One last round of betting happens before the Showdown where the winner is revealed.
4. The Chain of Command: Hand Rankings

-
Royal Flush: The untouchable 10-J-Q-K-A of the same suit.
-
Straight Flush: 5 cards in a row of the same suit.
-
Four of a Kind: 4 matching numbers (Quads).
-
Full House: 3 of one kind + 2 of another (The Full Crew).
-
Flush: Any 5 cards of the same suit—no sequence needed.
-
Straight: 5 cards in numerical order (running the numbers)
-
Three of a Kind: 3 matching numbers (Trips/Sets).
-
Two Pair: Two different sets of matching numbers.
-
One Pair: Two matching numbers.
-
High Card: No matches? The highest single card in your hand decides who wins the pot.
